Wriedt going back to the future

There's no need to label 6-foot-9 2018 prospect Chris Wriedt of Capital Christian High a throwback. That's because he does so himself and he considers it a proud and worthy reference.

Ranked #17 in the NorCalPreps 2018 boys basketball rankings, Wriedt has set big goals for himself. "I want to play in the NBA as a true center, like Kareem Abdul Jabbar. I don't know why but I've always watch his old tapes. Kareem and Shaq [Shaquille O'Neal] were real centers."

"When I was younger, I played everything--recreational soccer, competitive baseball and football." Of the latter, he honestly admits "I was never really good at it." But about basketball, "ever since I was a little kid, my Mom says I was dunking all the time on my Fisher-Price." Even when he was small, he was playing big.

"My shot has really gotten better," Wriedt noted. "During the season, I changed the way I shoot because I used to shoot from my chest." Working with the Capital Christian shooting coach aided this transition. Additionally, "with my post moves, I've tightened some up and added some."

Capital Christian Coach Devon Jones added, "Chris is growing into his body and polishing his offensive game. He protects the basket well and is a mid-major prospect right now with interest from SJSU, Cal Poly and teams in the Big Sky Conference. He wears a size 16 shoe so he's probably not done growing."

Wriedt cited his brother Larry as a prominent influence even though they are involved in different sports. "He played football in college and professionally but he has been helpful in telling me what to do."

On target academically and with a passion for general science, "it's always been interesting for me and I've given it some thought as a college major."

Prior to making his collegiate decision, he has set this as an objective. "I want three offers from schools I want to go to."

Capital Christian is coming off a 19-10 season, 12-0 in the Golden Empire League. A challenging non-conference schedule produced victories over Salesian and Weston Ranch with two wins apiece versus El Cerrito and West Campus. A number of solid Cougar talents are returning. "We're very big and it looks promising, scary good."

Sort of like Wriedt himself.
