Warren to Otterland

Cal State Monterey Bay is getting a steal. Yes, such is a term that is over-generously employed but not in this situation. The Otters are on the rise in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), having finished 12-8 this season and tied with Humboldt State, and now Kevin Warren in joining the cause.

The St. Mary's High Panther and Oakland Rebel player averaged over 20 points per game as a senior and not coincidentally Cal State Monterey Bay Coach Bob Bishop is graduating his top point producer as well as his third leading scorer, both guards with two other backcourt members have also completed their eligibility. So fill that scoring gap was a priority and Warren will supply just that. The Otters were fourth in scoring in the CCAA this season at 75.4 points a game.

"Coach Bishop and Coach Nate (Geiser) saw the potential in me and made me a priority," Warren explained. "I'll have the chance to play right away" He also liked that the Otters as a program "are on their way up."

Asked what he will bring to the court next season, Warren replied, "I can score in a multitude of ways and always give my best effort. I play with a chip on my shoulder, like I have something to prove."

Next on his agenda is a two-fold plan. "I want to get bigger and stronger. I also want to increase my athleticness." In the area of skills, one Warren focus will be working on "my [basketball] IQ skills by learning to make different reads depending on the situations."

Besides Warren, also coming in are three other northern California freshman: 6-foot-10 Anthony Booker out of Weston Ranch, 6-foot-3 Jahvon Johnson of Clovis North and Sacramento High's 6-foot point Stevie Matthews.

An added benefit to his signing is other CCAA members include Cal State East Bay, Stanislaus State, Chico State, Sonoma State and San Francisco State so family and friends will enjoy multiple college viewing opportunities of Warren.

Warren will be majoring in communications.
